Osaka station names, untangled

Osaka, Umeda, Shin-Osaka and Namba are not interchangeable station names. Match the railway company as well as the place.

Before you go

  • JR Osaka and Metro Umeda serve the same central area, with different platforms.
  • Shin-Osaka is a separate station.
  • For Namba, match the exact station and railway company.
Osaka and Umeda

JR Osaka Station and Osaka Metro Umeda Station serve the same central area. They are not the same platforms. Save the station name used in your route, rather than replacing every nearby station with “Osaka.” Your onward railway determines where you need to go.

Shin-Osaka is separate

On the Metro Midosuji Line, Shin-Osaka is M13 and Umeda is M16. They are distinct stops with other stations between them. A booking or route that says Shin-Osaka should not be read as JR Osaka.

Namba needs an operator

JR Namba, Nankai Namba, Metro Namba and Osaka-Namba refer to different railway stations or facilities. The Kintetsu station map shows the transfer relationships, but it is not a door-to-door hotel route.

Before setting off, check three things: the exact station name, your railway line and the exit appropriate to your destination. Use current station signs for the actual transfer, rather than assuming one universal underground path.
