Choose the tide before the torii view

Miyajima’s great torii changes with the water. Plan the view from the waterfront before planning the photograph.

Before you go

  • Use the official tide table for your visit date.
  • Travel through Miyajimaguchi to reach the island by ferry.
  • Keep time for the return sailing and follow local waterfront notices.
Decide what you want to see

The present O-torii was rebuilt in 1875. Its two main pillars and four supporting pillars stand in a setting transformed by the tide. If you want a water-surrounded view, look at the predicted water level rather than assuming a label such as “high tide” guarantees the photograph you have in mind.

The linked page includes a November 2026 monthly table and a separate date selector near the top. Select your actual travel year, month and day rather than using the displayed month or current-day reading for another visit.

Make the crossing part of the plan

From Hiroshima Station, the JR Sanyo Line toward Iwakuni provides access to Miyajimaguchi Station. Continue to the passenger terminal for the ferry; Miyajimaguchi is not on the island. Check the operator’s timetable and current notices, including the return journey. Weather and tide can affect the torii-view route.

Stay with the waterfront

View the gate and changing water from the waterfront without making a walk onto tidal ground essential. Low tide alone does not establish walkable conditions. Respect this religious setting and follow local instructions. The May 2025 photograph records one water level, not the conditions for your visit.
