Fudenosato Kobo, Kumano
A calligraphy brush or makeup brush contains layers of skilled handwork. In Kumano, examine the materials and tools behind brushmaking, watch a craftsperson when demonstrations are running, then explore how a familiar tool changes with the hand that holds it.
What to see
- The Brush Universe display traces writing and brush culture around a monumental brush.
- At the brushmaker’s house, watch Kumano brushmaking and ask about materials and techniques when the demonstration is running.
- Explore the four writing materials of brush, ink, inkstone and paper, plus water-writing and brush puzzles.
JR Yano Station → your visit
- Take the Kure Line from Hiroshima to Yano. On weekends and public holidays, a bus for Fudenosato Kobo runs to the terminus, about 100 m from the museum; this route began October 3, 2026.
- On other days, a Kumano-Hagiwara bus serves Nakamizo, about 1.1 km away. The approach has slopes and narrow pavements; check timetables or taxi connections.
Closures & important conditions
Closed Mondays, or the next weekday after a holiday. The winter exhibition notice explicitly gives December 28, 2026–January 4, 2027 as the New Year closure. Check the official calendar for exceptional changes around exhibition installations.
- November 6–8, 2026: brushmaking demonstrations and brushmaking experiences are suspended; the operator says other services continue normally.
- Etegami works are unavailable for changeovers on December 4, 2026 and January 15, 2027; these are not whole-museum closures. Adult entries run through December 25 and children’s entries start January 5.
- Recheck gallery access between exhibitions and the brushmaking demonstration schedule before visiting.
