Kyoto Station to the old streets
Choose your destination within Higashiyama first.
Kyoto Station · Jun 2025
Kyoto Station and Higashiyama are different places. One rail-first option goes via Tofukuji, changing to Keihan for Kiyomizu-Gojo, then continuing on foot. Your exact destination determines the best route. Respect private lanes and photography signs; never chase or photograph maiko or geiko without permission.

Before you go
Higashiyama covers more than one sightseeing stop. Decide which place you want to reach, then check the final walking section. A station called Higashiyama is not automatically the best station for every destination in the wider area.
Kyoto City’s official access guide describes a route from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line to Tofukuji, transferring to Keihan for Kiyomizu-Gojo and continuing on foot. Choose services that stop at the required stations.
Another option uses the Karasuma subway line to Karasuma Oike, then the Tozai Line to Higashiyama. These are orientation options for different destinations, not a claim that either train arrives at a temple entrance. Check current services and your exact destination before travelling.
Keep bulky luggage out of a crowded sightseeing walk where possible. Respect private lanes and posted photo restrictions. Do not chase, touch or photograph geiko or maiko without permission, and avoid blocking streets. A scenic photograph does not establish permission to enter or photograph the same spot today.
