A quick check before the platform.
Kyoto Station · Jun 2025
Check the railway company, station, line, destination and stopping pattern before heading to the platform. Use the live departure board. JR-WEST and Kintetsu limited expresses require the appropriate limited-express entitlement as well as basic fare; products can combine these, so this does not mean two paper tickets. Other operators have their own conditions. Queue as marked and keep doors clear.

Before you go
Start with the correct railway company and station, then find your line. Check the train type and destination on the departure board, and confirm that the service stops at your intended station. Finally, follow the displayed platform information. This is our editorial checklist, not a universal four-step procedure issued by every railway.
JR-WEST local, rapid and special rapid services use the applicable basic fare. JR-WEST limited-express and Kintetsu limited-express services also require a limited-express ticket or appropriate entitlement. Ticket products can combine elements, so do not assume there must be two separate paper tickets.
Other railways use their own service names and conditions. Do not generalise these examples to every train called “Limited Express,” or assume an IC card alone covers every service.
Queue where marked, avoid rushing for a departing train and leave doors clear. Keep large luggage out of the doorway. Follow staff instructions and current signs; a photograph of a display cannot tell you today’s platform.
