Toji Temple’s Five-storey Pagoda
The five-storey wooden pagoda is a distinctive Kyoto landmark; the surviving tower dates to 1644. This photograph pairs its exterior with a weeping cherry tree in spring. Interior viewing and evening visits follow separate seasonal schedules.
Current visiting conditions
Spring blossoms and evening lighting record 4 April 2024; they are not current bloom or an upcoming night-opening promise. Pagoda first-storey special admission, ordinary hall visits and sutra copying have different tickets and cut-offs. The photograph is an exterior, not an interior or activity image.
Planning checked: 2026-10-31
Check before setting off
The 2026 schedule lists special admission to the pagoda’s first storey, Kondō and Kōdō from 31 October to 13 December (individual adult ¥1,200). Evening admission is a separate session and ticket, not the same interior access.
This dated plan now needs checking again. Actual implementation or opening has not been confirmed; use the latest official notice.

Begin with the pagoda, then enter the Kōdō to see how sculpture expresses Buddhist teaching. Sutra copying offers a different experience: tracing the text one character at a time.
This photograph records 4 April 2024 at 18:40: a weeping cherry and the illuminated pagoda exterior. It does not establish current blossom, nightly lighting or dates for next spring.
Three things to look for
1 | Follow the pagoda’s rooflines
The approximately 55-metre pagoda was rebuilt in 1644. Compare the drooping cherry branches with its tiered roofs. Special interior visits concern the first storey, not a climb to a viewing deck.
2 | Read a mandala in sculpture
Twenty-one Buddhist figures surround Dainichi Nyorai in the Kōdō. Compare calm and fierce expressions and the central and surrounding positions: the arrangement itself communicates the teaching.
3 | Copy the Heart Sutra in the Jikidō
Apply at the Jikidō on arrival for Heart Sutra copying: reception 09:00–15:00, offering ¥1,000. Brush, ink and paper are provided. Ceremonies or events may change the location or hours.
From a major station
Kyoto Station — Hachijō exit
From the station’s southern Hachijō exit, walk approximately 15 minutes / 1.1 km to Tōji, 1 Kujō-chō, Minami-ku.
If arriving by Kintetsu, Tōji Station is approximately 10 minutes / 0.6 km on foot from the temple. Allow this walk despite the shared name.
Paid-area admission and sutra-copying reception have different cut-offs. Travel-date train and bus services remain unverified.
These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Listed prices are information checked on the stated date; reconfirm travel-date departures, fares and admission conditions.

A confectioner at 88 Tōji Higashimonzen-chō, offering Tōji mochi and yomogi daifuku. Its confectionery-association listing gives 07:00–19:00, closed on the 6th, 16th and 26th except weekends and public holidays.
These are association-listed hours; same-day opening, availability and prices are unverified.
Before you go / what remains uncertain
Hours and ticket boundaries
Ordinary gate hours are 05:00–17:00; Kondō and Kōdō open 08:00–17:00, last admission 16:30. Mieidō and Jikidō visits are free, unlike paid areas and special exhibitions. Special-opening prices vary by period.
Sutra copying is a quiet religious practice
Sutra copying is not verified as an entertainment event or an English-led class. Follow staff guidance and give worshippers priority. Kanchi-in also accepts copying participants, but has separate admission arrangements.
The photograph is not a visitor shooting permit
Do not assume indoor or Buddhist-sculpture photography is allowed. Follow posted restrictions and staff directions, keeping paths clear. The complete general shooting and commercial-publication rules were not established from the official material reviewed.
A possible order — editorial suggestion
View the pagoda exterior, visit Kondō and Kōdō with the appropriate ticket, then check copying reception at the Jikidō before 15:00. Consider a confectionery stop afterwards. This daytime plan is separate from the photograph’s evening scene.
Still to verify for your date
- Spring 2027 blossom and evening dates, same-day copying availability, English support, additional charges, the photographer’s individual facility permissions and temporary shop changes remain unverified.
