Tall dark rock formations rise from turquoise and white surf in a vertical coastal composition.
A coastal photograph from 10 March 2024, as dated by FIND47. The dramatic surf is a past scene, not a recommendation to visit in rough weather or approach the rocks.

Byobuiwa, Tango Coast

Vertical rock, an open sea.

Screen-like rock rises above white surf in this striking portrait photograph. For a visit, head to the land-side roadside lookout.

From the lookout, compare the rock’s silhouette with the folding screen suggested by its name. Enjoy the contrast between the upright rock and the sea stretching out around it.

Getting there

About 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Tango Railway’s Amino Station, according to Kyoto by the Sea. Tankai Bus’s Kaigan Line serves Byobuiwa, but service is sparse and differs by day and direction. The April 2026 weekend/holiday timetable shows roughly 41 minutes from Amino and a last listed return departure from Byobuiwa at 12:28; verify both directions before setting out.

View screen-like andesite formations from the land-side lookout beside Route 178. Harder rock remained as the surrounding material eroded. Stay within the permitted viewpoint and respect barriers; do not descend to the surf or climb the rocks.

Kyotango Tourism Corporation listed the viewpoint when checked on 31 October 2026. This does not guarantee access on a particular day: follow road and viewpoint restrictions and current weather guidance. The Japan Meteorological Agency warns against approaching the coast during wave warnings or advisories. Do not seek to recreate the photograph’s rough-sea or early-morning conditions.
