Kyoto Shibori Museum: an itajime silk scarf

Fold silk, clamp it between boards, then reveal the pattern after dyeing. Near Nijo Castle, this specialist shibori museum turns a Kyoto dyeing technique into something you can wear.

What you will do

Clamp a silk-georgette scarf between boards and dye it in two stages using the itajime technique. The approximately 180 × 46 cm scarf is ready to take home that day. Museum admission is included, so you can see shibori works and tools after the workshop.

Time: From 30 minutes. Allow extra time for making, drying and looking around the museum.
