Takachiho Gorge and Manai Falls

Columnar rock walls frame Manai Falls at Takachiho Gorge. Enjoy the view from open lookout and walking areas; check rowing-boat operation separately.

Before you set off

The official 10 October 2026 update confirms partial path construction closures and a road detour. July’s reopening after a full closure does not mean every path is now open.

Rowing-boat tickets for 6–7 November 2026 are sold out through advance booking; no same-day tickets or waiting list are available (tourism association update: 5 November, 09:02 JST). This concerns boat bookings, not a closure of all gorge walking areas. High water can also suspend operation, so check the visit-day operating status separately.

JR Nobeoka Station → your visit

  1. Take a local bus towards Takachiho and alight at Takachiho Bus Center (the tourism association estimates about 90 minutes).
  2. The official FAQ places the gorge within a 30-minute walk of the bus center. The approach descends and the return climbs; follow signed detours around construction.

The walking estimate is for normal conditions; detours may add time. Local buses are limited and gorge shuttles run only on specified dates. Check the timetable and return journey before departure.
