Harajiri Falls flowing over a curved rock escarpment into a turquoise pool.
Harajiri Falls, photographed 10 April 2024. Water flow and accessible paths vary; this is a dated landscape photograph, not a live view.

Harajiri Falls

A wide waterfall cuts across the Ogata plain. Look for the curved rock face and vertical joints formed in ancient volcanic deposits. Enjoy the view from designated paths; flow changes with weather.

Current visiting conditions

Photographed on 10 April 2024. Flow, weather and accessible areas vary. This is not directions or permission to reach the photographer’s exact waterside position; use designated paths.

May 2024 path repairs and 2025–26 roadside-station redevelopment concern visitor infrastructure. This photograph is not evidence of current paths, terraces or toilets. The October 2026 boat event is historical, not an activity advertised as operating now.

Planning checked: 2026-10-31

Set in farmland rather than deep mountain terrain, Harajiri rewards a wider look: notice the contrast between its spreading water and the surrounding level landscape.

OT01 was taken on 10 April 2024. Blue water, yellow flowers and clear weather record that day, not guaranteed water flow, blooms or present access to the photographed footing.

Three things to look for

1 | Follow the spreading water

Water crosses a roughly 120 m-wide rock edge in separate streams. Take in the whole span, then follow individual strands to appreciate movement that a still photograph cannot capture.

2 | Change position, compare shapes

The roadside station describes Takimibashi suspension bridge and a circuit around the falls. Use only paths open on the day; compare the width from the bridge with the depth seen from land.

3 | Do not chase the camera position

Do not read the foreground rocks as an authorised path or designated photo point. Enjoy the sound and farmland setting from safe visitor routes rather than trying to reproduce the photographer’s footing.

From a major station

Start at Oita Station and plan a JR Hohi Main Line journey to Ogata.

  1. Check departures and any transfers to Ogata for your travel date; no specific departure or through service is promised here.

  2. Official tourism guidance gives about five minutes by car from Ogata to the falls—not five minutes on foot. Arrange both onward and return transport before arriving if you are not driving.

  3. Use Michi-no-Eki Harajiri-no-Taki, 936-1 Harajiri, Ogata-machi, as your destination. On arrival, check signs and restrictions before following open visitor paths.

Taxi availability at the station, fares and travel-date bus schedules remain unverified. A five-minute driving estimate does not guarantee a waiting taxi.

These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Travel-date departures, fares and current admission prices are not verified.

Nearby culture, food & rest stops

Optional stops, not guaranteed openings or a combined ticket.

Ryubu flowing-somen restaurant

Near the falls, Ryubu serves somen using tabletop flowing-water equipment. The prefectural tourism listing gives 11:00–17:00, until 16:00 in winter, closed Wednesdays, at 917-1 Harajiri.

The winter season’s start date, temporary closures, last orders, reservations and language support are unverified. Check the restaurant’s latest notice before setting off.

Before you go / what remains uncertain

Let present conditions decide

Weather changes water levels and footing. Regardless of the sunny photograph, check rising water, wet surfaces and restrictions; never cross barriers or closure signs.

A possible order — editorial suggestion

Editorial suggestion: arrange the return journey → check local guidance at the roadside station → view the falls and bridge from open routes → eat only after checking opening. No fixed visit duration is assumed.

Still to verify for your date

  • Travel-date restrictions, bridge access, water flow, transport connections and current facility charges/hours.
