Before you go

  • Walk the historic street from Shitamachi toward Nakamachi and Kamimachi.
  • Check the return train and individual shop hours.
  • Respect homes and ask before photographing interiors.
Follow the town’s shape

Narai-juku preserves roughly one kilometre of the old Nakasendo street. From JR Narai Station, a simple editorial route follows Shitamachi, Nakamachi and Kamimachi before returning. It is a street visit rather than a Torii Pass trek, so you can turn back according to your time and energy.

Notice the details

Look for latticework, deep eaves and dashibari construction, where the upper floor projects beyond the ground floor. Between Nakamachi and Kamimachi, the kaginote bend interrupts the straight street and its sightlines. These details give the walk a focus beyond taking one broad photograph.

Visit a living town

Residents help maintain this historic district. Nonresident cars and motorbikes cannot enter; arrive by public transport or use parking outside and continue on foot. Shop services vary, and interiors require permission to photograph. The December 2024 image is a winter reference, not a snow forecast. This route stays on public streets and does not include a Kiso Ohashi crossing.
