Wakayama Castle from the Honmaru ruins

Look up at white walls and layered roofs from the former Honmaru. Stone ramparts and hillside paths reveal the castle’s changing levels.

The present keep was reconstructed in 1958. This is not a photograph of its museum exhibits.

Keep closed all day on 9 December

If also visiting the keep: it is scheduled to close all day on 9 December 2026 for cleaning. The city says other facilities such as the zoo and Kōshōan operate normally; this is not a notice closing the entire park or corridor bridge.

Getting there

From the central exit of JR Wakayama Station, take a Wakayama Bus service toward the castle and alight at Wakayamajo-mae (official estimate about 10 minutes). Alternatively, walk about 15 minutes from Nankai Wakayamashi Station, then follow park signs to the garden, corridor bridge or Honmaru ruins.

Check visit-day transport. Walking estimates are to the castle grounds, not the hilltop keep or every sight; slopes and steps remain. The city’s 2026 guide gives 10 minutes from the Nankai station, while this card uses the castle website’s more conservative 15 minutes.
