Walk through the sloping Ohashi-Roka Bridge
Step inside a roofed corridor bridge reconstructed along the lord’s former route between the Ninomaru and Nishinomaru. Its sloping floor and timber structure are the experience—not just its exterior.
Current visiting conditions
The image records March 2025, not current blossoms, autumn colour, crowding or every physical detail.
These are three distinct sights within the same Wakayama Castle grounds, not three separate towns.
Recheck current opening, temporary restrictions and year-end closures shortly before visiting.
The corridor bridge is a 2006 reconstruction, not the surviving original. Remove shoes before crossing.
Bridge hours differ between the March 2026 city guide (09:00–16:45) and an older castle leaflet (09:00–17:00); their New Year closure information also differs. Late-day or New Year crossing is not guaranteed: check the castle’s latest guidance.
Current admission prices and same-day access are unverified. Distinguish walking in the park from entry to the keep and individual facilities.

Check before setting off
If also visiting the keep: it is scheduled to close all day on 9 December 2026 for cleaning. The city says other facilities such as the zoo and Kōshōan operate normally; this is not a notice closing the entire park or corridor bridge.
This dated plan now needs checking again. Actual implementation or opening has not been confirmed; use the latest official notice.
Look beyond the hilltop keep to a roofed, walled timber bridge linking Ninomaru and Nishinomaru. A short crossing offers a different view of the castle: a passage used in the daily movement of its residents.
WK03 records the interior on 9 March 2025. Its light and empty floor do not guarantee present crowds or access. This is the 2006 reconstruction, not a surviving Edo-period structure.
Three things to look for
1 | Read the incline in the floor
The roughly 27 m bridge spans a height difference of about 3.4 m. Watch your footing and notice the crosswise floorboards, which the city describes as designed to reduce slipping.
2 | Follow lattice light and timber lines
In the image, window light falls in patches on the floor while the ceiling beams lead the eye toward the far opening. If stopping to look, do not block passage; the photographed light is not guaranteed.
3 | A passage designed for privacy
The walls and roof served a purpose: the city guide describes discreet passage for the lord and close retainers between the two baileys. Compare the open castle grounds with this enclosed interior.
From a major station
JR Wakayama / Nankai Wakayamashi
From JR Wakayama, take a local bus toward Wakayama Castle to Wakayamajo-mae or Shiyakusho-mae. Walking to the castle grounds is another option from Nankai Wakayamashi; these are different stations.
Inside the grounds, follow signs for Ohashi-Roka, Ninomaru and Nishinomaru. This is not the keep entrance. Allow additional time within the grounds beyond any station-to-park estimate.
The city’s 2026 guide gives about 10 minutes from the Nankai station; the previously checked castle guide gives about 15. Treat these as estimates affected by entrance and pace; check current buses and signs.
These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Travel-date departures, fares and admission prices still need checking, even where dated prices are listed below.
Nearby culture, food & rest stops
Optional stops, not guaranteed openings or a combined ticket.
Momijidani Garden and Kōshōan teahouse
An optional stop within the same castle grounds. At Kōshōan, visitors without tea-ceremony experience can enjoy matcha at seated tables. The city lists ¥600 with a fresh sweet or ¥500 with a dry sweet. This is tea service, not a booked tea-ceremony lesson.
The teahouse lists 09:00–16:30 and closure from 29 December to 3 January. Private bookings may prevent ordinary visits. Garden and teahouse arrangements differ; same-day entry and service are not guaranteed.
Before you go / what remains uncertain
Remove shoes before crossing
The city instructs visitors to remove shoes. Take care on the sloping, ridged floor and avoid obstructing others with luggage. Step-free wheelchair access has not been established.
Plan for an earlier visit
The March 2026 city guide lists 09:00–16:45, free entry and closure on 29–31 December. Older material differs, including a 17:00 finish. Do not rely on late-day or New Year access; check current on-site notices.
Image reuse is not a new photography permit
The published image comes from an existing city open-data release. It grants no new on-site commercial shoot permission and does not authorize equipment that obstructs passage. Follow local signs.
A possible order — editorial suggestion
Cross from either bailey, continue to the garden, and consider matcha at Kōshōan if time and opening allow. Treat these as parts of one castle-ground outing, not separate towns.
Still to verify for your date
- Same-day access and crowds, latest New Year arrangements, bus departures and fares, and a fully step-free route remain unverified.

Original photograph & route notes
From the central exit of JR Wakayama Station, take a Wakayama Bus service toward the castle and alight at Wakayamajo-mae (official estimate about 10 minutes). Alternatively, walk about 15 minutes from Nankai Wakayamashi Station, then follow park signs to the garden, corridor bridge or Honmaru ruins.

- Before setting off
- Check visit-day transport. Walking estimates are to the castle grounds, not the hilltop keep or every sight; slopes and steps remain. The city’s 2026 guide gives 10 minutes from the Nankai station, while this card uses the castle website’s more conservative 15 minutes.
