Black fences and snow-covered trees along Kakunodate Samurai Street
Black fences and snow-covered trees along Kakunodate Samurai Street

Kakunodate Samurai Street in snow

Black fences and tall trees define this historic street. A January 2025 snowfall reveals the quiet geometry of its walls, gates and rooflines.

Check before setting off

Winter demonstrations are not daily

A city notice dated 6 November 2025 limits December–March craft demonstrations to Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Recheck your intended date.

Temporary exhibition: master craftspeople of kabazaiku

The city lists 3 October 2026–24 January 2027 for this exhibition. The period includes a New Year closure, so verify the opening calendar even within those dates.

The city schedules autumn lighting for 16 October–23 November 2026, 16:30–22:00. View from Samurai Street: this is not evening admission inside the houses. The photograph is a January 2025 snowy scene, not a photograph of this event.

The city lists Iwahashi House through 30 November and the former Matsumoto House through 10 November. Ishiguro House has also announced suspension of public admission after 30 November 2026. The snowy street photograph does not mean these interiors open in winter; other houses have separate arrangements.

Explore the place, route & visiting details

Plan time both for the street and for whichever houses or craft facilities are open. Rather than making snow the sole purpose of the visit, compare the buildings and explore the town’s craft traditions.

This photograph was taken in snow on 18 January 2025. It does not show snow or house-opening conditions on your travel date.

Three things to look for

Compare fences and gateways

The scene is built from dark fences, formal gateways and mature trees. Alternate close views of the gates with wider views that include branches and roofs.

Choose an open historic house

Check each house before planning an interior visit. Ishiguro House has announced that public admission will be suspended after 30 November 2026. Walking the street is separate from entering the houses.

Explore kabazaiku craft

Kakunodate Kabazaiku Densho-kan presents craft and historical displays, with demonstrations on selected dates. Watching a demonstration is not the same as taking a hands-on workshop; check what is actually available.

From a major station

JR Kakunodate from Akita, Morioka or Tokyo

  1. 1 | Choose a train that stops at Kakunodate

Use the Akita Shinkansen to JR Kakunodate, checking the stop pattern for your chosen train and date. Do not assume that every service calls here.

  2. 2 | Walk from the station forecourt

The tourism association gives about 20 minutes from the station forecourt to the entrance of Samurai Street. Check a town map before starting.

  3. 3 | Add the interiors that interest you

Once on the street, select open houses or the craft museum and fit lunch around your return train. The walk to the entrance does not include sightseeing time.

Allow extra walking time in snow or rain. If you need a continuous step-free route or alternative transport from the station, verify the route for the particular facilities you intend to visit.

These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Travel-date departures, fares and current admission prices are not verified.

Nearby culture, food & rest stops

Optional stops, not guaranteed openings or a combined ticket.

Kakunodate Kabazaiku Densho-kan

A base for exploring local craft, cultural and historical displays. A cafe is listed, but check its operation rather than relying on a guaranteed meal stop.

Sakura no Sato, main shop

A lunch option in Higashi-Katsurakucho, with Hinai-jidori chicken and Inaniwa udon among its official offerings. Meal service starts separately from opening, and irregular closures are possible; check current notices.

The shop lists 10:00–15:30, meals from 11:00, last order 15:00, with irregular closures. Check separately from the other Sakura Kōji branch.

Before you go / what remains uncertain

Street access does not mean every house is open

The city lists Iwahashi House for 3 April–30 November, 09:00–16:30, and the former Matsumoto House for 10 April–10 November, 09:00–16:00, with irregular closures. Do not plan on their interiors during the snowy season. The tourism association also announces suspension of public admission to Ishiguro House after 30 November 2026. Check the opening days and accessible areas of other houses individually.

Keep the walk flexible in snow or ice

Use suitable footwear and watch for snow, ice and snow falling from eaves. Keep traffic routes clear and stay out of private gardens. Shorten the walk when needed; blossom and autumn-colour timing also varies.

Editorial planning / safety advice

A possible order — editorial suggestion

Kakunodate Station → Samurai Street → one open house → craft museum → lunch → station. Swap the interior visits according to your interests and opening days.

Still to verify for your date

  • Travel-date snow, ice, blossom/foliage and temporary house closures or restricted areas.
  • Whether a demonstration will actually run, staffing, restaurant availability and allergy arrangements.
  • End-to-end step-free access and travel-date train times and fares.
