A small boat follows shaded waterways. Pass beneath low bridges, then explore Matsue’s tea culture on shore.

Explore the place, route & visiting details

Horikawa sightseeing boats explore the waterways around Matsue Castle. Their small scale brings you close to the waterside. This photograph shows a boat from outside, not the castle keep or the view from a passenger’s seat.

This photograph is the photograph dated 11 September 2026, checked against the photographer’s record and EXIF. It shows trees, stonework and a roofed boat—not winter kotatsu equipment or proof of current operation.

Three things to look for

1 | A town at water level

Look up at stonework and trees from near water level. Notice how a different viewing height changes the townscape and the experience of passing under bridges.

2 | Passing beneath low bridges

City tourism describes a full circuit passing 17 bridges, with the roof lowered at four. If changing posture may be difficult, ask before boarding and follow the boat operator’s instructions during the manoeuvre.

3 | Tea after the boat ride

Allow separate time for tea and the shapes and colours of Japanese sweets. Kiharu, inside Matsue History Museum, is in an area accessible without an exhibition ticket.

From a major station

From JR Matsue Station, take the LakeLine sightseeing loop toward Otemae.

  1. The prefecture’s car-free guide directs visitors to LakeLine at JR Matsue Station stand 7. Check the transport bureau’s current boarding and timetable information before departure.

  2. Alight at Otemae Horikawa Yuran-sen Noriba / Rekishikan-mae and follow signs to the Otemae boarding reception. The bureau lists it immediately after the Matsue Castle (Otemae) stop. The prefectural boat guide gives an approximate 15-minute bus journey.

  3. Check the return separately: a loop bus need not take the same time back to the station. Reception and boarding queues are additional to the approximately 50-minute cruise.

The operator lists individual one-day tickets at ¥2,000 adult, ¥1,600 junior/senior high school, ¥1,000 elementary school and ¥500 preschool, with one preschool child free per adult. These prices were checked against the official information on 31 October 2026.

Karakoro has no regular originating boat; boarding depends on space on passing services. Reception closes ten minutes before closing time, twenty at Karakoro. Be in the waiting room five minutes before departure. Final-boat seats and same-day operation are not guaranteed.

These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Listed prices are information checked on the stated date; reconfirm travel-date departures, fares and admission conditions.

Nearby culture, food & rest stops

Optional stops, not guaranteed openings or a combined ticket.

Matsue History Museum and Kiharu

Enjoy tea, Japanese sweets and a garden view in the museum’s free-access area. Café hours since 1 April 2026: weekdays 10:00–17:00; weekends/holidays 09:30–17:00; last orders 16:30. Closed Mondays (next weekday if a holiday), following museum closures.

Food and drink cost extra; seating, reservations and English support are unverified. The official page announces Tsugio Itami’s retirement, so his sweets demonstration is not promised. Café and exhibition conditions differ.

Before you go / what remains uncertain

Plan an earlier autumn/winter departure

The prefecture lists 09:00–17:00 March–September and 09:00–16:00 October–February, normally daily. Bad weather can stop trips or alter the route; listed hours do not guarantee a same-day departure.

Duration, booking and language

A full circuit takes about 50 minutes. Reservations are for groups of ten or more or private boats, from 180 days ahead until 17:00 seven days ahead. An online ticket purchase for a small party is not necessarily a timed reservation. The prefecture lists multilingual leaflets and a translation device, not guaranteed live English commentary.

Check the correct year for kotatsu boats

Dates for winter 2026–spring 2027 kotatsu boats remain unverified. General seasonal descriptions differ from the December 2025–March 2026 notice; neither has been reused as this year’s confirmed schedule.

A dated cultural exhibition to pair with the cruise

The museum’s armor exhibition runs 16 October–13 December 2026, displaying armor associated with the Matsue domain. Normally 09:00–17:00, reception until 16:30, closed Mondays (next weekday if a holiday; exceptionally open 2 November). Exhibition admission is charged.

A possible order — editorial suggestion

Editorial suggestion: check return transport at the station → Otemae reception → cruise → museum or café if open. If crouching is difficult or boats are cancelled, switch to a land-based cultural visit rather than forcing the ride.

Still to verify for your date

  • Same-day changes, waiting when full, 2026/27 kotatsu dates and exact wheelchair boarding procedure.
Checked sources

Before you go

  • Choose a boarding point using the operator’s current course information.
  • Follow crew instructions when the roof is lowered at a low bridge.
  • Poor weather can change the route or suspend sailings.
A different view of the moat

Horikawa sightseeing boats follow the waterways around Matsue Castle. Low bridges are a distinctive part of the trip: the boat roof can be lowered to pass underneath. Stay attentive to the crew rather than concentrating only on your camera.

Match your plan to the boarding point

The operator lists Fureai Hiroba, Otemae Hiroba and Karakoro Hiroba as boarding places, with different boarding arrangements. Check the latest course and boarding information before choosing where to start. This article does not promise a departure time or an immediate seat.

Winter plans need a current check

Official tourism information describes winter kotatsu boats, but its season dates are inconsistent. Confirm the current winter arrangement with the operator. The September photograph shows an ordinary roofed boat, not proof of the coming winter’s equipment or service.
