Old Sakai Lighthouse
A white wooden lighthouse on the old port waterfront offers a different side of Osaka beyond the central city.

Check before setting off
The city plans a special first-floor opening on 7 November 2026, 12:00–19:00. Upper floors remain inaccessible. Weather cancellation and entry limits may apply. Although the wider festival runs on 7–8 November, this lighthouse opening is listed for the 7th only.
This exterior photograph dates from 25 April 2025. It includes the white tower, stone base, water and port beyond. The interior is normally closed, so plan primarily for an exterior and waterfront visit.
Three things to look for
1 | Trace the tapering six-sided form
Compare the corners, horizontal white cladding and stacked windows. Knowing that this is a six-sided timber structure makes its three-dimensional shape easier to read.
2 | Start with the stone base
The stonework below differs sharply in color and texture from the white tower. Move your eyes from the base to the lantern to see how this modest structure stands out in a wide harbor.
3 | Keep the working port in the frame
The lighthouse ceased operating in 1968 as coastal reclamation progressed. Keeping the modern port in the frame helps explain why this surviving building no longer serves its original role.
Read the photograph & local culture
Notice the transition from gray stone to white cladding, the vertical line of windows and the cranes beyond. The image does not show interior access or an operating beacon, and it is not an invitation to cross waterfront barriers for a matching angle.
Built in 1877 with support including local donations, the lighthouse is described by Sakai’s tourism association as a six-sided timber structure, restored in 2001–2006. A piece of working-port infrastructure has become a conserved reminder of the city’s maritime history.
From a major station
Sakai Station, Nankai Main Line
Use Sakai Station on the Nankai Main Line, not Sakaihigashi. Walk west toward Sakai Old Port and the lighthouse.
The city gives a distance of about 1,200 m; Osaka’s tourism board estimates roughly 15 minutes on foot. Follow local port signs to the exterior viewing area.
There is no lighthouse parking. A numbered station exit, turn-by-turn route and fully step-free access have not been verified. Follow local restrictions and waterfront weather conditions.
These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Travel-date departures, fares and current admission prices are not verified.
Nearby culture, food & rest stops
Optional stops, not guaranteed openings or a combined ticket.
Ohama Park
A green-space option to combine with the lighthouse. The city dates the park to 1879 and lists lawn areas and toilets: a change of setting from the harbor edge.
Sports facilities have separate conditions. The city currently lists the tennis courts as under construction, so they are not suggested here.
Before you go / what remains uncertain
The interior is normally closed. Treat special openings as dated exceptions, not as evidence that visitors can regularly climb the tower. Adjust the waterfront walk to wind, rain and local conditions.
Photographer permissions, exact viewpoints, current weather, temporary access and same-day availability are not independently established by these photographs.
