Vermilion torii gates and white lanterns along the stone stairway at Makekirai Inari in Tamba Sasayama. Photographed 2024-12-28. Lanterns and votive decorations may change. The capture date is supplied by the individual FIND/47 record; the JPEG has no EXIF date for independent confirmation.

Makekirai Inari, Tamba Sasayama

A sequence of vermilion torii gates leads up a stone stairway on Ojiyama. This is a living place of worship associated with a local story of victory. Climb quietly, give way to worshippers and follow on-site notices; lantern arrangements can change.

Current visiting conditions

The approach has more than 200 steps. Give way to worshippers and follow current notices. This is Makekirai Inari in Tamba Sasayama, not Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. The 2024 lantern decorations are not guaranteed today.

White lanterns and vermilion gates frame a stepped approach in Tamba Sasayama, where a local victory legend lives on.

Explore the place, route & visiting details

Makekirai Inari on Ojiyama is a place of worship associated with Honkyoji, a Nichiren Buddhist temple. Look beyond the sequence of gates to the relationship between temple and Inari worship and a local story about victory.

FIND/47 records this photograph as taken on 28 December 2024. The supplied JPEG has no capture EXIF, so the date relies on the source record. Lanterns, offerings and crowds can change. This is neither Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari nor a hall interior.

Three things to look for

1 | Repeated gates and lanterns

Repeated crossbeams and lanterns draw the eye up the stone steps. Pause only where you can avoid blocking worshippers and other visitors.

2 | The story behind “Makekirai”

The official origin account tells of local Inari deities appearing as wrestlers and winning before the shogun. Read this as a religious and local legend explaining the name, not as a verified sporting record.

3 | More than 200 steps, at your own pace

The temple describes more than 200 steps from the main torii to the Inari hall and introduces smaller shrines along the approach, including Heikichi Inari. Watch your footing and explore within your ability rather than rushing for a photograph.

From a major station

From Osaka Station, travel to JR Sasayamaguchi; continue by bus and on foot to the approach.

  1. The city’s tourism guide routes visitors from Osaka via the JR Fukuchiyama Line to Sasayamaguchi. Check travel-date trains and transfers; the railway station is not the old-town destination itself.

  2. The temple directs visitors from Sasayamaguchi’s west exit onto a Shinki bus toward Sasayama Eigyosho, alighting at Hon-Sasayama or Tatemachi. Check current operation with Wing Shinki’s Sasayama office guidance.

  3. Follow the temple’s directions north from the stop, turn right at Kawaramachi intersection, left after about 240 m, then continue about 200 m to the main torii. The stairway climb begins after this approach.

Total journey time, current fares and a step-free alternative are unverified. On diversion days, first confirm which normal stops can be used.

These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Travel-date departures, fares and current admission prices are not verified.

Nearby culture, food & rest stops

Optional stops, not guaranteed openings or a combined ticket.

Odagaki Mamedou and main shop

A black-bean shop and café at 19 Tatemachi. The café normally opens 11:00–17:00, last orders 16:00, closing Thursdays (next weekday if a holiday) and at New Year. Retail hours are 09:30–17:30, closed at New Year. Bean-based drinks and sweets offer a separate food-culture stop.

These are the operator’s current listed hours, not the older 10:00–16:00 café schedule. Temporary closures, seating, booking conditions and exact 2026/27 New Year dates remain unverified.

Before you go / what remains uncertain

Check conditions for the December 2026 observance

The temple’s calendar explicitly dates the Kosodate Kishimojin festival to 6 December 2026. Start time, public participation, booking and charges remain unverified; this is not a confirmed event-booking offer.

Walk as a guest in a place of worship

Take extra care when rain or leaves affect the steps, and put worship and passage before photography. Gate hours, amulet-office service, prayer reservations and foreign-language support were not established.

A possible order — editorial suggestion

Editorial suggestion: check the return bus → walk to the main torii → visit the stairway within your ability → take a black-bean break in Tatemachi if open → return with time to spare. No fixed worship or photography duration is assumed.

Still to verify for your date

  • Same-day precinct access, prayer/amulet office hours and charges, detailed photography rules, a stair-free route and 2027 festival dates.
  • Exact walking distances to surrounding businesses or cultural venues, same-day seats and English support.
