Hotaruika Museum

Explore Toyama Bay’s deep sea through light and living creatures. Winter visits focus on luminous plankton and a deep-seawater touch pool. The experience differs from the live firefly-squid displays of spring.

Closures & important conditions

Closed Tuesdays from June 1 to March 19, or the following day if Tuesday is a public holiday. Exception: open Tuesday December 29, 2026. Closed December 31–January 5, reopening January 6, 2027; also closed January 25–27. Open February 23 holiday, closed February 24. The official March calendar lists closures on March 2, 9 and 16.

Hours & admission arrangements

09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Shows run roughly once or twice per hour, with times supplied on arrival; the 16:00 hour has one show at 16:30.

Ordinary individual visits are listed as not requiring reservations. Ask 076-476-9300 about groups, show times and VR participation.

  • Standing June 1–March 19 admission: high-school age and above ¥620; ages 3 through junior-high ¥310. Standard March 20–May 31 admission is ¥820 / ¥410.
  • Allow around 60 minutes, plus any show waiting time or extra activities.
  • Official Toyama tourism lists wheelchair access and loans, an elevator, ramps and accessible toilets. Arrange any assistance in advance.
  • Optional VR costs ¥600 for about five minutes. Recommended age 14+, height 140–195 cm; ages 7–13 require the same height range and a guardian.
What still needs checking
  • The actual start and animal availability for the spring 2027 live display were not confirmed. The standing March 20 season description is not a guarantee of sightings.
  • Same-day VR availability, cancellation/refund terms and live English commentary were not confirmed.
