A way to look

Choose one detail that drew you to the photo, then look for shapes, patterns or uses that catch your attention in the galleries. Rather than trying to see everything, choose archaeology or Japanese art as your starting point.

About this museum

Trace Japanese art and archaeology in Ueno Park, from historical overviews to ceramics and swords. Exhibits rotate, and individual galleries may close temporarily.

What to see

  • Japanese art, crafts and historical objects in the Honkan
  • Japanese archaeology in the Heiseikan
  • Themed displays including ceramics and swords
Before you go

Before leaving, select your visit date in the official exhibition calendar and cross-check gallery closures in Visitor Information. An open museum does not mean every building or room is open. Separately check whether the collection object that caught your eye is scheduled for display.

An optional detour

If you head back toward Ueno Station, Mihashi’s flagship shop is an option for anmitsu. It is three minutes on foot from JR Ueno’s Shinobazu Exit—not next door to the museum. Check the shop’s current hours and irregular closing days before making the detour.
