Osaka · Permanent cultural facility
National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku)
Travel through everyday life around the world using clothing, tools, dwellings and music. In Osaka’s Expo ’70 park, the galleries also make familiar Japanese traditions look newly interesting.
What to see
- Follow the regional galleries eastward from Oceania around the world to Japan.
- Explore cross-cultural music and language displays to compare differences and connections.
- Use the free digital guide to see and hear how displayed objects are used in their original settings.
Osaka Monorail Bampaku-kinenkoen / Koen-higashiguchi Station → your visit
- About 15 minutes on foot from either station; consult the official gate-by-gate routes.
- For passage to Minpaku, buy the museum ticket at the park gate; eligible free-admission visitors such as high-school students and younger should obtain a pass at the staffed window. This is distinct from admission for exploring the park.
Closures & important conditions
Closed Wednesdays, moving to the next weekday when Wednesday is a public holiday. The standing New Year closure is December 28–January 4; extra 2026–27 closures were not verified. Severe weather or closure of the surrounding park can cause temporary closure.
- Main-building exterior work is scheduled from September 28, 2026 through late March 2027. Check the appearance and surrounding access routes before visiting; this notice is separate from the normal main-gallery opening schedule.
- Do not confuse free passage to the museum with a ticket to freely explore the Natural and Cultural Gardens or Japanese Garden.
