Saitobaru Archaeological Museum of Miyazaki Prefecture
Connect the burial-mound landscape of Saitobaru with the history beneath it. Designated touchable stone tools and pottery make ancient daily life tangible through their weight, texture and patterns.
What to see
- Displays connect southern Kyushu’s landscape, East Asian exchanges and burial-mound cultures.
- Models of Osahozuka and Mesahozuka, plus a full-size reconstruction of Underground Tomb No. 4.
- Handle designated stone tools and pottery and learn how to observe archaeological objects.
JR Miyazaki Station / Saito Bus Center → your visit
- Take a bus from Miyazaki Station to Saito Bus Center, about 70 minutes, then a taxi for about 10 minutes.
- The route via the museum was discontinued in October 2022; do not rely on older directions to a museum-front bus stop.
- By car, about 40 minutes from central Miyazaki or 10 minutes from Saito IC. Plan the return taxi as well.
Closures & important conditions
Closed Mondays, or the next day if Monday is a national holiday. Also closed the day after a public holiday unless that day is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday. New Year closure: December 28–January 4. Published 2026 closures: November 2, 4, 9, 16, 24 and 30; December 7, 14, 21 and 28–31.
- Touch only the designated objects and follow the instructions, handling them gently with both hands. Not every exhibit is touchable.
- The shelter over the Sakamoto-no-ue tunnel tombs has an indefinite closure notice; this is separate from the museum’s opening status.
- Walking the wider burial-mound landscape requires extra time and preparation for the weather.
