Tsujun Bridge History Museum and Exterior
This stone aqueduct still carries irrigation water to terraced fields. Learn how it works inside the history museum, then look at the arch as working infrastructure that sustains village life. In winter, models and film explain its purpose without relying on a live water discharge.
What to see
- Use the moving model, original stone and wooden pipes and construction materials to understand how water reaches the higher ground.
- Watch discharge footage on a 200-inch screen, including on days without a live discharge.
- View the approximately 78-metre stone arch, completed in 1854, from the public exterior viewing area. The bridge deck is closed to visitors.
Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal → your visit
- Take Kumamoto Bus M3-2 toward Tsujun Sanso and alight at Tsujunkyo-mae; the official guide gives about 1 hour 29 minutes. From Kumamoto Station, first travel to Sakuramachi Bus Terminal.
- For driving, use Tsujun Bridge Mieru Terrace beside the bridge as your destination. The relocated Michi-no-Eki Tsujunbashi near the interchange is a different location, not the bridge forecourt.

Closures & important conditions
The museum closes Tuesdays except public holidays and discharge days, and December 29–January 3. No substitute closure is stated. The official homepage says bridge-deck visits are suspended for FY2026, with FY2027 undecided. Water discharge pauses December–March to protect the stone from freezing.
- Discharges may be cancelled at short notice for irrigation needs, bad weather or maintenance. Check official notices before departure.
- The January 2026 printed calendar includes deck-admission prices, but the later suspension overrides them. Do not plan to walk across the deck.
- A December–March visit centres on the museum and exterior. Do not expect live discharge or access to construction areas.

- The 2026 calendar schedules a roughly 15-minute discharge at 13:00 on November 6–8, 11–15, 18–23 and 25–29. November 22 also has an 11:00 discharge.
- The Futa Shrine-side car park is unavailable during the FY2026–FY2028 Okoya restoration works. Follow the bridge-area parking guide and signs.
What still needs checking
- The New Year dates are the published normal closure rule; a separate 2026–27 special-hours announcement was not verified.
- A continuous step-free route from the museum to exterior viewpoints, wheelchair loans and foreign-language interpretation are unverified. Ask the museum about your requirements.
- A 2027 discharge calendar and a bridge-deck reopening date were not verified. The general winter pause does not establish a spring restart date.
