Fukuroda Falls and Viewing Tunnel
See a 120-metre, four-tier waterfall from two perspectives: close to the water at the first viewing platform and above it after an elevator ride to the second. Autumn colour gives way to winter conditions in this Oku-Kuji landscape. Ice formation depends on the weather, so check recent conditions rather than assuming the falls will be frozen.
What to see
- The first platform, close to the spray and sound of the falls
- The second viewing area, reached by an elevator rising about 50 metres
JR Suigun Line Fukuroda Station → your visit
- Take a bus for about 10 minutes to Takimoto, then walk about 10 minutes. A taxi from the station takes roughly 10 minutes; walking the whole way takes about 40 minutes. Bus services are sparse, so plan the return first.
- Free municipal car parks are about 1.2–1.4 km from the falls; private paid parking is also available nearby. Allow about 50–60 minutes by car from Naka IC.
Closures & important conditions
Open year-round, with no regular weekly or New Year closure. The official notice also schedules lighting daily from 7 November 2026 through 31 January 2027. Check for weather or equipment-related changes before departure.
- Freezing is not guaranteed every winter or every day. Bring warm clothing and shoes with grip, and follow local advice in ice or snow.
- The listed evening extension applies only to the stated dates. Arrange transport separately for a night visit. Viewing the falls is distinct from hiking the mountain trails toward Namase Falls.
