Explore the place, route & visiting details

This museum occupies the former third bailey of Sendai Castle. Rather than following only famous warrior names, look closely at an everyday object or a town pictured in an artwork to find a more personal connection with Sendai’s history.

This photograph is the exterior photograph dated 21 December 2025. It shows the building, forecourt sculpture, driveway and trees—not galleries, collection objects or an activity. No permission to reproduce interior artwork photographs has been obtained.

Three things to look for

1 | Notice originals and replicas

Permanent galleries rotate seasonally. Autumn 2026 includes material on Date-family beliefs and merchant life. The displayed Masamune armor is explicitly labelled a replica: do not mistake it for the original.

2 | A museum beyond looking

Play Museum provides old-style toys, tools and replicas for hands-on learning. Distinguish objects intended for handling from collection items in display cases, and follow the room’s instructions.

3 | Start with one object

For a first visit, choose one object and study its shape, material and possible use before reading the label. Finding a memorable object can be more rewarding than trying to read everything.

From a major station

From Sendai Station, take the Tozai subway to International Center Station. The museum gives about eight minutes on foot from South Exit 1.

  1. Take a Tozai Line train toward Yagiyama Zoological Park and alight at International Center. Allow separate time to transfer from JR platforms to the subway.

  2. Turn right after the ticket gates for South Exit 1. Bear diagonally right outside, with the International Center exhibition building on your left. Follow the pavement beside it rather than going uphill.

  3. Cross at Kokusai Center-mae and continue with Goshikinuma pond on your right to the museum. Return trains toward Arai serve Sendai Station. Do not confuse this route with the climb to the castle’s main bailey.

Individual permanent-gallery admission is ¥460 for adults/university students, ¥230 high school and ¥110 elementary/junior-high students. Special exhibitions use separate pricing. Free-entry days and discounts have specific dates and eligibility.

The museum’s alternative is Loople Sendai from JR Sendai west-exit stand 16, approximately twenty minutes to the Museum / International Center / Ryokusaikan stop, then around three minutes on foot. Queues and traffic may add time.

A completely step-free journey, path conditions during snow/ice and same-day transport are unverified. Prefer public transport to reliance on limited parking.

These are route segments, not a guaranteed total journey time. Listed prices are information checked on the stated date; reconfirm travel-date departures, fares and admission conditions.

Before you go / what remains uncertain

Admission closes before the museum

Normally 09:00–16:45, last admission 16:15. New Year closure: 28 December 2026–4 January 2027. Monday and post-holiday rules have exceptions, so use the official date-by-date calendar.

Separate visiting from image permission

Follow individual labels and museum rules for photography and publication. This supplement conveys neither reproduction permission for collection images nor permission to photograph every exhibit.

A possible order — editorial suggestion

Editorial suggestion: check exhibitions and closures → arrive from the subway beside Goshikinuma → choose an object to study → visit Play Museum or the café. Duration depends on your interests; no fixed visit length is imposed.

Still to verify for your date

  • Same-day individual admission reservation conditions, foreign-language interpretation/instruction, object-specific photography rules and same-day craft-material stock.
Checked sources

  • Admission ends before closing time.

Plan the museum stop

The museum is in the former third enclosure of Sendai Castle. Its official opening hours are 09:00–16:45, with admission until 16:15. Use the calendar for your actual date.

Arrive from the subway

The museum directs visitors from International Center Station on the Tozai Line, South 1 exit. Check the official access guide rather than treating the nearby castle viewpoint as the same stop.
