Gassan Dam
At Tsuruoka’s Asahi Gassan Lake, the broad concrete dam makes a striking contrast with green mountain slopes. The information hall explains the dam, while guided internal visits offer a closer look at its working structure when available. This is Gassan Dam in Tsuruoka, not Sagae Dam in Nishikawa.
Current visiting conditions
Visitor hours are listed as 09:00–16:30. Closed on weekends and public holidays from December through March, and 29 December–3 January. Internal tours are subject to courses and operations: advance booking is recommended, not guaranteed admission. The information hall normally needs no booking; flood response may suspend visits.
This is Gassan Dam in Tsuruoka, not Sagae Dam or the reservoir commonly called Gassan Lake in Nishikawa. The photograph records summer greenery on 16 June 2026, not today’s season.
Gassan Dam's information hall is closed all day on Saturday 7 November 2026 for an inspection-related power outage. The dam office's 4 November notice says normal opening resumes on Sunday 8 November. This is an information-hall closure, not a notice closing the entire dam area.
The dam office lists about 30 minutes by car from JR Tsuruoka Station, or about 25 minutes from Shonai Airport using the Yamagata Expressway. These are approximate driving times, not a scheduled public-transport service. A seasonal approach-road change took effect on 28 April 2026; follow current office guidance and on-site signs rather than the winter tunnel route.
