The Sumida Hokusai Museum

An angular passage into Hokusai’s world: start with the architecture.

Reading notes checked: 2026-11-01 · not a recheck of individual collection display dates.

Notice the architecture

Kazuyo Sejima’s design opens toward the neighborhood through slits and exterior passages. Slightly reflective aluminum panels change how the surrounding streets appear on the façade. Try changing your viewpoint and comparing reflections and the lines of the passage.

About this museum

Learn about Hokusai, his links to Sumida and ukiyo-e production through multimedia and full-size, high-definition replicas. Check current special exhibitions for original works.

What to see

  • Education Room—Discover Hokusai—tracing his life by artistic name and period
  • Films on color woodblock printing and Hokusai Manga touchscreens
  • A model of the studio shared by Hokusai and his daughter Oei
A way to look

Inside, follow how Hokusai’s expression changes across the artistic names he used. The Education Room centers on high-definition replicas and audiovisual displays. Its printmaking film is not a hands-on printing session. If original works are your priority, check the visit-date special exhibition and works list first.
