Naramachi Karakuri Toy Museum
Inside a traditional Naramachi townhouse, set old-fashioned mechanical toys in motion. This small, free museum invites you to discover ingenious mechanisms through play rather than simply looking.
What to see
- Handle and play with reproductions of toys devised from the Edo period onward.
- Try the movements and playing methods with explanations from staff.
- Enjoy the former Matsuya residence, built in 1890. Toy-making classes are separately advertised activities, not included as an everyday workshop.
Kintetsu Nara Station / JR Nara Station → your visit
- About 10 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara, or 15 minutes from JR Nara.
- No parking is provided; combine the visit with a Naramachi walk.
Closures & important conditions
Closed Wednesdays. The city’s detailed guidance moves a holiday Wednesday closure to the next non-holiday, and also closes two days after a public holiday unless that day is a weekend or public holiday. Closed December 29–January 3. Check the operator’s monthly notices around holidays; a separate 2026–27 New Year notice was not verified.
- An ordinary visit lets you play with the display toys. Toy-making classes are advertised separately; check their dates and application conditions.
- Confirm closure dates around public holidays through the operator’s latest notice or by phone.
