Hakata Machiya Folk Museum
Near Kushida Shrine, follow the everyday life behind Hakata’s festivals and trade. The townhouse’s passage garden and high open interior, festival models, old street photographs and working craftspeople connect today’s city walk with an earlier Hakata.
What to see
- A relocated mid-Meiji weaver’s home and workshop, with latticework, box stairs and a courtyard.
- In the exhibition building, see Yamakasa films, festival models and past-and-present photographs, and listen to Hakata dialect through telephone receivers.
- Watch Hakata weaving at scheduled times in the townhouse. Ask the craftsperson about a free try at the loom when work and visitor conditions allow.
Kushida Shrine-mae subway station → your visit
- Walk about 4 minutes from Kushida Shrine-mae on the Nanakuma Line, or 5–6 minutes from Gion on the Airport Line.
- About 15 minutes on foot from JR Hakata Station; there is no dedicated car park.
Closures & important conditions
Closed on the fourth Monday, or the next weekday if it is a holiday. The FY2026 calendar marks November 24 and December 28–31, 2026, and January 25, February 22 and March 23, 2027 closed. Weaving demonstrations and trials additionally pause on Wednesdays and throughout July–September; this is not a whole-museum closure.
- Plan around both museum closures and the separate demonstration schedule; use the current annual guide.
- The standard accessory-case activity uses prepared cedar pieces glued and finished by the participant; it does not promise hot-water wood bending.
